My New Calf

The dairy farmer had a calf for sale.

But where was I going to keep him?

I didn't have a pen, and I didn't have a barn.
So, Mom and I built one.

We sawed wood, hammered nails, and stretched fence.
Soon we were ready for the calf.
But how were we going to get him home?

We didn't have a truck, and we didn't have a trailer.
So we put him in the back seat of the car.

The calf wiggled, but I held him tight.
Finally, we arrived at the barn.
But what would I feed him?

He wouldn't eat grass, and he wouldn't eat hay.
So I mixed up special milk in a big bottle.

The calf drank from the bottle then laid down to sleep.
Afterwards, I went inside and went to bed.
In the middle of the night, the calf started to bawl.

He woke me up. He sounded sad.
But how could I help him?

The calf couldn't sleep, and I couldn't sleep.
So I went to the barn and laid my blanket on the hay.
And that's where Mom found us in the morning.
